For the rig, you don't really need any joints for this. They are just gonna complicate matters. Instead you can do more or less everything with simple hierarchies and constraints. From what I've seen, BSP is best for things like quickly designing levels and play testing them. If you are designing a level from mostly an artistic standpoint, maya has much more freedom.
