Think what is missing is a clear subject or focal point. As a sculptor myself I know how hard and fun sculpting rocks is, so it is tempting to make your whole scene just about rocks. Yeah I'd agree that these programs are very convoluted, Maya in particular has been a byzantine labyrinth of epic proportions right from the beginning, not the least since it started life as a merger of a bunch of formerly standalone products from different companies.
