I made some 1960's inspired characters not long ago. I really enjoy researching these things. Hairstyles, uniforms, shoe fashion and work clothes I really love the 60's.
Well what I did was to sculpt the folds and reduce the intensity of the layer by 60% and you are right about my images. I'll scale the images down. Here are a some of the reference I am using.

Err, not sure. To get to the default values it should be... Normals - Calculate Smoothing Angle - 60 (Can't edit this if normals are set to import) Normals - Import Tangents - Calculate And you'll need to re-bake the lightmap.
just a critique on the site itself. I'd suggest against a bright white background. In my experience, its jarring to the eyes. Something less bright, closer to a 60% grey, would be more relaxing on the eyes.
try this: create about 50-60 spline objects, with around 20-30 lines each. does your viewport chug? i think it might be a vista 64+ nvidia driver incompatibility issue.
