I think the most important thing is that the normals, weather they are sculpted and baked or created with something like nDo, are appropriately simplified / exaggerated to match the visual style you're after. Oops. If you want the mesh to match the location of the spline, use the World Space PathDeform modifier, not the Object Space one.
