named layers are weak. named, hyper-complex layer sets are awesome. Diffuse->Metal->Rust->Scratch->patina->Base. Masks on every one. This way I can adjust anything and copy/paste layers as needed. Plus it means each layer inside each set is usually fairly self evident :) -

The 0 or 1 idea is generally right, as long as you're aware of transitions, layering, paint, patina, rust, etc, happening on top of the metals. A cast iron would be metallic if you broke a skillet in half and looked on the inside. The only materials I commonly see that are in between 0 and 1 (before layering on details)… -

Here is an update following some of your comment. I worked on the dark metal part, aiming for a brass with a very dark patina and found a way to make more convincing wood vein. By the way all the texturing process have been made in substance designer, except the normal map for which I used Xnormal and Handplane. -

Yeah I think the metal texture was also a little too contrasty now that I look at it. For this version I reduced the bump for the engraving, lowered the opacity for the grime in it as well. I also found a few more ref pics of a vintage pistol that had a nice brown patina to it. I think going that direction helped a lot. -

It's gunsmith at the moment @wannabe . I like the tiny reflections it gives compared to custom paint job. I really don't understand where you're using all those polygons on the knife - 2.4k is very high for what you have. The top of the grip should be smoother, and the blade should have two distinct edges. Note the distinct darkening around the finger holes, and the patina on the blade. Also, there's a great deal of pitting…
