Darksiders styled art tends to be heavily diffuse-powered. Id say if you want to use a photo to get the gritty details, I'd get rid of a lot of the noise and focus on getting large, readable shapes. Yes if you hide the part you want to keep sharp (ctrl+shift) you can blur just the visible part. -

The high poly image is kind of small but those edges look too sharp to bake down well. Soften them up! -

Well, that explains a lot. I was also wondering if smooth groups have any other purpose beyond creating sharp edges.
