Excellent post, I often drop questions to artists like Mr. Ace that really do help me, but in more top of the line work I tend to not get a reply. I sure hope it isn't an attitude of "I had to struggle to get to where I am, why should I make it easier for you, so you can take my job?" Adam, perhaps we should have another…
I don't like the whole small/big thumbnails all over the place, its too confusing imo. I like the way that CG gallery is, a small thumbnail to the side of the thread, so you can quickly see what the thread is about, but in a more stuctured way.
Another point worth making: IN a thread filled with "OMG SO AMAZING" you could try and lead by example with your own reply. It's what I do -- I typically ALWAYS ask a question or two in the same post I've told someone I enjoyed their work. Always.
There's an old adage that, if you really want to understand something, write about it. It applies here, because creatives make gut decisions all the time without really thinking why something feels right, looks better, or works easier. Write about it. Post it up. Everyone benefits.
I'd be down for a +1 system if it was there for the person who started the thread as like a thank-you for usefull posts or something. I'm all for giving people props but it kinda sux to open up P&P and see the TF2 thread with 6 stars or whatever and 0 for mine. just sayin.
Ive been a really long time lurker, I read pretty much every morning every thread that looks interesting and again at night before I got to bed. This forum has been invaluable to me as a resource of ideas techniques and general knowledge. For me I only post my work when I need a really fresh eye - when Ive been looking at…
Back it up there Marry Mayweather. That's how it came off, even though that may not be what he meant, hence the 6-7 page sh!t storm that followed. "It would be cool to see more WIP threads." is what I get out of the original post, if you read between the whines...
I think you nailed it. Cgfeedback//Polycount clone should be perfect. This makes me angry too. When i check the views of my Art dump and the replies. I usually want more comments but people just will not contribute. And i don't have time to go post on another boards.... :(
I love this post, adam. I definitely agree, that pattern could stagnate us all as artists in the long run. I also think, it comes down to some people not wanting to show their "secret-sauce". But to those people i say that it's the challenge from others and the different interpretations of your particular techniques…
I'm not much of an expert on javascript or anything but that's probably how you would do it. The way I think it would be done is you have something like the thumbnail previews like McGreed showed, then use those to randomly generate the mosaic like Pior showed. Since they would be drawing thumbnails from specific threads…
