The click/press thing is a deliberate design to make LMB select work correctly. It's discussed in this bug report and this design task. Basically drag = box select, click = select. There is an extra tool in the selection called Tweak if you need to shuffle a bunch of verts around. Smooth shading usability is on the todos.…
yeah, individual origins refers to the centers of contiguous selections, not the center of each selected element. Can be non-intuitive, but it is quite useful for some purposes.
More random questions I can't find answers to :) How do I delete a single key frame from the currently selected bone in the 3d view, alt-I removes all keyframes inside the rig. I can do it in the dope sheet but would rather hotkey it. Can I select bone groups with hotkeys? Would be great to use ctrl 1 - 9 while in pose…

Maya doesn't select an edge loop that goes past a pole on a cube either. IMO Blender does it right and Modo does it wrong. Say I want to select the edge loop that includes this edge: What makes this selection: any more correct than this one?: Terminating edge loops at poles even when there's just one edge involved makes…
As far as I know that's the way it works in Blender too. Just because it displays the face centers doesn't mean that you have to select there, you can click in the corner and it'll just work. It works the same way for box selection. If you need to select through you can either use the Wireframe view mode or toggle the…
