Check this out, its not perfect but with some adjustments it could do the work. 1. Make a cylinder with square subdivisions. 2. Chamfer all the verts and weld. 3. Extrude and bevel by polygon all faces. 4. Add supporting edges as you wish. 5. Add turbosmooth. 6. Add bend modifier.

Just a friendly reminder that I thought needs to be thrown out (something I need to remind myself as well) :) Perna more than likely did not MANUALLY DO EACH segment and rather did a single extrusion section(4 sides) and copied the rest around to get equal quality and to save the aggravation of doing it PAINFULLY SLOW.
It quite worked for me; at the second try, I managed to obtain a good mesh, pretty close to the original; My workflow was: 1) Global shape; 2) Negative model of the holes (perpendicular to the chair surface); 3) Boolean subtraction of the holes; 4) Clean up of the geometry (this was the worst part of the work); 5) Shell…
@perna I just got super frustrated while getting the "x" shape with the holes. I dragged some vertices around to round out the corners and used duplicate special to create all 4 sides after that. It felt a little unnatural modeling the piece. Just looking for other peoples input on how they'd do it.
@ivanthestupid Hi! just use the tool scale wait a little. soon I'll do a mini-tutorial 1 Get the error. Do as you did before. 2 Turn on the mode edge constraint Choose a chain of edges. 3 Use the tool scale axis y 4 Do the same as you did before. With all the rest. 5 Done!
Precisly Keyword for stuff that curve, Spacing! And i added enough geo, Because every side needs 2 supporting loops (+1 the one thats already there) 6*3 = 18. Did not like the spacing so i added 4 extra edges where there were to big spacing apart, so in total 22.
Just did a quick and dirty edit roughly 3-4 mins on the mesh. Please try to understand the concept of subd before attempting to do hard surface stuff, this thread literally filled with similar questions over and over again and people doesn't seem to read any of the fundamental basics being explained many times before.
Tris will also create quads when subdivided...the rule "quad only" when its spewed out without even trying to understand it will only do harm instead of helping. I think that what you mean by the 8 sided thingy is that when you subdivide its in the power of 4 ? altho thats tottally irrelevant when modeling . The hole with…
How about something more like this? I know that's not perfect, but I think it's the right direction :) You might need some more faces in the big vertical cylinder shape. Personally I would practice on some simpler shapes first. Instead of something with 4 or 5 cylinder shapes merging at add angles, try something with just…
