A lot of games use speedtree or something similar. However I'm not a big fan of speedtree. It tends to make these bland, polygonal looking, trees. Looking better. I think you should play with the lighting a bit though. Getting the lighting and atmosphere established will help you along so you can make your assets match the atmosphere. Wow those trees look really nice Daz, but then again Speedtree had these great looking trees for a few years already, and they never appeared in any game so far. Well... maybe that is about to change.

UT3 uses an integrated version of speedtree. ;) You DON'T have to make them. (in most cases) also Toonshoes. Tying knots is a lot harder when you have to think about how the string actually bends. :)
