This is probably very unlikely that it would be the case, but have you tried deleting history on your object? I always get slow selections regardless of component when its got a lot of history on the mesh.

Thats why i created a History Editory for Maya. works similar to Max being able to turn on and off history items.. i still need a good way to move history up and down the stack. Construction history is only inputs. Deleting construction history will only affect the inputs on your mesh not your outputs. Those outputs might be inputs on something else though.
