It might be that you need to invert the green channel of your normal map (if rendered with default Max settings) in Photoshop. Strange that Maya's default normal map bake didn't work for you, it should be exactly what Marmoset needs.
You know, I was suspicious of changing those. I was wondering if there was a reason they were set to those for default... I've actually always been suspicious of everything peanut posts. Ah well. *goes back and sets them to default*
I found what it was tough: you need to force sampler states on everything, never assume the default states are used 'by default' (how ironic). In my case the 'clamp' flag supplanted the 'wrap' one on some textures where it was left blank.
no lights means in most 3d packages 1 default light usually a white one resulting into grey shaded imagse. The first version of maya did not have a default light but as far as I can remember any other package had.
Preferences:Config:Save UI. Personally I just modified my \UserInterfaceLayouts & \UserInterfaceColors folders so that they only have the default ui + colors, and mine. It makes switching between the default and my preferred much faster as they are the only options to cycle between.
We figured out the issue, we will have a fix in our next build. It appears you changed the format of your output node in the sbsar to "DXT" instead of "Default". Unless that was intentional, I recommend staying with "Default" in any case.
In 2011 you have the Marker pixel display to default 20, but in 2016 you have it set to 23. My guess is it's a visual thing as you have the pixels at an odd number. Set it back to the default 20 and see what happens.
I wouldn't trust max viewport too much anyway. Also you have 2 default lights which produces ugly shading. Max has the worst settings by default haha. It's under configure viewports/visual style.
Oh, unfortunately the trimsmoothborder it's NOT on the default menus, you can find it on the lightbox pressing "," Go to brushes - trim - and u'll find it there, you will be able to save it to your default menu after u get it. Btw, thanks for the kind words again!
this depends. i personally found the maya default marking menus just too slow and not specialized enough for my workflow. here is the link for the defaults: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?157484-Maya-Demystified-The-Hidden-Marking-Menus
