EQ: Yeah, if you multiply AO into diffuse then it will always shadow even if the surface is lit by a direct light (which doesn't happen in reality) ... it's called "ambient occlusion" for a reason! If you have it as a separate map then you can actually use it in a more correct way - only multiply if not affected by direct…
