Most of the time you want to have everything the same size if you can. Though there are no rules against it, in this case I would have tried to use as much space as I could, so I would have probably scaled the corners and the bottom. Lore, decent model, but I agree with Chris Holden here, especially on the texture. In theory, you're correct that you would lose some lighting information, but from looking at the texture itself, there isn't that much lighting information to lose. Especially on the small pieces. It could definitely be reduced in size…
