Yeah, I'm still figuring out a better painting technique. I actually start by using a larger brush to put in some colours first, but the lines help guide where I would eventually blend them to create better details. I'm aware it's not close to being done, it's only just the first pass of colours. I'm just getting warmed… -

Just to push this a bit further maybe consider the colour blends between surfaces... like the reflections from bounce lights should be considered to take the texturing to the next level so the golds should receive a little bit of red/dark silver etc from the parts surrounding it and vice versa on… -

To be fair, this effect can be overdone with real life photography as well. Therefore I would say that yes, it is often overdone in games - but the effect itself is not to blame, just the use of it. I like the edge wear of 2 and both the dirtiness of 3 and 6. As mentioned by others, the idea isn't to pick one type of wear, it's to blend all types of wear that could effect the surface detail of your model in a way that doesn't make it too busy.
