Actually ive got it to work one way by making a quad patch grid but if I already have a editable poly and then convert it to a editable patch my box with the patch deform mod on it says it is an illagal patch :s
Thanks, I realized that if I need to to look 'perfect' I need to add more divison on the 'teeth' 's low poly, that I don't want. But using blend modifier to model these kind of stuff is a useful tip.
A quick note, Maya 2015's shrinkwrap by default will made your circle shape lopsided unless you change the projection to Vertex Normal in the options for shrinkwrap. Works like a charm though, thanks for sharing that ZacD!

The ropes are under tension as displayed in your reference concept image. So try manipulating the curve/s too convey that, also where the bowstring is tied at both ends of the crossbow stave, the knots should be positioned closer to the stave.

Dropbox can be a lifesaver, i put almost every script and stuff i have in there and have it on every one of my pc´s. And for now it may seem overkill for one picture, but i´m almost sure that there are more to come.
I use 3dsmax because it has almost everything i need and i learned to live with its annoying parts. Other choices would be modo because it´s awesome for just modelling or softimage because i just like it. ;)
@Filip5regular or not does not really matter @"Klaus Hustle" example can be adopted easily to your boats shape. in any case his topology is much cleaner and more easy to control while your´s already showing shading issues.
