yep, the vmt file is the shader of the model, it is on the material/models/heroes/drow folder there you can see if it have or not the line that defines if it uses the transparency or not

I don't use blender, but in 3DS importing the SMD comes with the unwrap, so just create a new material with the texture, apply it and everything should be dandy!
