you can bake anything, normalmaps, ambient occlusion, color, texture, cavities, curvature and so on. You can transfer a hell lot of more info from your highpoly to your lowpoly -

In Maya 8 there's a new transfer attributes tool that does it. It's so fast, you can drag your low poly mesh around and watch it slide along the high rez, pretty cool! -

You should be able to find a used, older copy of photoshop on ebay for relatively cheap. Just make sure it's legit, unregistered, and the seller knows how transfer the activation if it's been installed already. -

I would try to find another color for the red crystal. It kinda breaks out of the whole color concept and imho distracts too much. Maybe try a more purple or blue-ish color there. And as marul suggested, shader masks. they are really really important and can greatly add to the whole thing, transport a good amount of… -

Some good tips for not feeling depressed (a) stop thinking too much (b) walk or exercise 30 mins every day (c) cut down on sugar and caffeine (d) cut down alcohol/nicotene intake (e) don't get wound up over things beyiond your control ie late trains public transport etc. -
