There's a setting in lightmass called "lighting scale". I remember setting it to a really small number (or half of the default) and that helped mitigate that issue. I've experimented with that in UE4 and it does work. There's some issues like it doesn't work with the foliage tool, and performance on my old rig (i7 2600, 16gb ram, gtx 570) was horrible.
