Marcus from gears of wars is painted on 3 2048 maps (spec diff and normalmap), and a 512 for hairs (don't think xan has hair, did he ?). No separate sheet for head and his face is good enough for close up so i think you should stick up with the 3 2k maps. (just my two cents)
The models/textures look good for such low specs. You're a Flash wizard. Is most of your work programmed from scratch or do you build upon and mod existing engines? I've been doing some Actionscript programming in Flex and was wondering if you have any good resources (links, books, or otherwise) that you could point me…
You want to be an environment artist, so might as well call yourself one in your title. I'd totally goto town on making a world to go around the turret. I also wouldn't call the turret done because you still need to tweek the spec map as mentioned in its thread. Other than that everything is looking great.
Does it also support other map styles like normal and spec? I have been learning the modular approach from the 3dmotive tutorial and other sources, but on this piece it wont really help me because its already really simple. Just seems like it should be really easy to get bricks to tile around corners :poly136:
I have no idea really, let's just say rts specs. With a reference you mean a concept, or a picture, right? I don't really have one, I'm just designing when modeling :P I made the model a bit longer, it looks a lot better now (doesn't look like a big lunchbox anymore). The uvmap:
Haha what a bunch of A-holes :P Obviously it does depends as there is no such thing as a polygon count per console, but if it's the lowpoly specs thread you are looking for: http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=87756&an=0&page=0#Post87756 It's in the archives section, and for some reason you can only…
Damn, that avatar of yours puts me in a trance ;p Everything looks great so far, my minor gripe is that she is a bit off from the concept, but maybe you prefer some of the creative decisions made while modeling. Also on a pretty detailed model like this, a bump map and spec map would make it even better. Keep at it!
2k for hair is unreasonable and unrealistic and uncalled for. lights are obviously supposed to be red, but you've textured them bright white and they aren't bathing her in red light. looks a little weird. texture looks a little muddy. is there a spec map on her? not a bad model, but it's not done yet. little bit more…
Thank you for the detailed feedback @Peyd3d, I really appreciate the time you took to write this and even provide the paintover. It’s very helpful. =) You’re absolutely right about studying reference and thinking more about how assets are actually constructed. The point about assets reading as single pieces is something I…
Looking through the spec suggests png can theoretically support signed values but I don't think I've ever seen it done and I'd be surprised if most exporters support it. you'd probably want to use tiff or exr (possibly .HDR) as a source format to store the numbers. it'd need compressing to a gpu friendly format that…
