I don't know how to answer your question, but I can point to an answer. Recently, a found a lot of articles regarding Epic Games Paragon and verticality. How verticality can change mobas and the way of play. maybe you can find something useful researching Paragon.
For simple flat surfaces bsp is just fine. For something like a fence or a window I would make it out of static mesh. Have a look at the way epic makes their maps. There's several of them included with UDK. You can open them up and look - it is a great learning resource.

Your sculpts are really nice man! the last one is epic, I just feel the fist on the left arm is kind of awkward... like, I would hold the ball with both hands out like the right hand. just my thoughts on the hands. Other than that, its great! :)

iirc the epic guys were saying the exact same thing in the making of video available in the CE edition of UT3, they treat weapons as carefully as characters and try to give them as much detail as possible because they are the real heroes/avatars of the game. Or maybe was it in the CGTALK interview...don't remember exactly
