Got the low-poly done, it's about 16k tris right now. Here are some screenshots of the normal/ao bake and wireframes taken in marmoset toolbag. I still need to do some tweaking and cleanup but for a first pass I'm fairly happy with the bake. -

Im not sure what kind of ship your trying to make, maybe some reference would be nice? By the type of bow and the difference between your decks i guess your going for some 16th century galleon? Actually, i can't really tell since a galleon would have less length and more width, but anything with this lenght and width… -

I think 16bit apps won't run under Win7 64bit. Like old DOS or Windows 3.1 games. Though I think there are emulators for such things nowadays. -

im a bit stumped as to why you'd bother doing this but im going to assume you have your reasons it works fine if you triangulate the mesh first so Noors is probably correct. the bad news is that if you run it on a mesh with about 1600 triangles it hangs in 2012 (posh i7 with 8gb) if you're planning on greebling or similar… -

If you don't adjust the Bias and Distance setting Blender takes the lowpoly as the center of your displacement map. If your highpoly is only outside (above) your lowpoly, you need to set the bias to half of the maximum distance, can be a bit troublesome to figure out, but the result will be a map from 0.0 to 1.0 not just… -
