Either way you round it, that step throws away half the detail in your blue channel. That's 1/6th of the detail in your whole map! Is that much loss really acceptable? I don't think it is.

You can use Detach and tick the "Detach As Clone" option to copy in place (Max2009). I have it on hotkey now. Progress at Autodesk is measured by adding extra steps to do things I guess.

Update! Current progress, and I decided to post it up. I've started on the hair and getting it laid out. Debating on stepping back on it with the flows of hair, and then detailing it. Again as always, comments and critiques are most welcome. :)
what happens when you just export as fbx and then import back into max missing the maya step ? As this is what I get (max 2020) doesn't matter what settings you use the result is always the same
