Sure, I just tested cube map reflection on that bath house scene that was posted here a while back, it has the same result of my personal project so I know it's not something with the scene itself. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This message will pop up every time when you launch the script(hotkey, button,rc menu) and there is no selected object in the scene. It shows up after installation too because you scene was empty/no selection. Nothig to worry. :)
Sourcy refers to the spots/pools of light that you have. Either soften the penumbra or add some fill lights to blend them better into the scene. Key light refers to you main directional lights, these are the strongest in your scene.
If you're still looking for other things to add to the scene, the water in some of your reference images caught my eye. A stream or pond or some such could add some more interest to the scene and break up the endless grass.

Have you tried opening a blank scene and merging yours into it? Are you trying to shorten or legthen the timeline? What do you have in the scene? A BiPed with footsteps will sometimes make max cry if you try to scale the timeline.
I vote for more vram cause we have trouble to render our scenes if the card has only 8gb. Renderman xpu for example recommends a min of 11gb vram. But if you dont render heavy scenes 8gb are fine.
