Displacement maps generally never replace normal maps, at least in games, as the displaced meshes are not re-normalized, so you wouldn't get accurate shading if you tried to use only a displacement map.
I've been using it for about a month now as direct PS replacement. It was a fairly easy transition. There are a few little things to get used to but for the most part I think it's going to do the job nicely. :)
Sounds like it might ultimately come down to replacing my graphics card. I don't have the money for a Quadro at the moment. Can anyone report that the performance of ATI based cards are any better?
Totally fuckin sucks! Dang, only thing that strikes me is the yellow on the door handles seems outta place unless they were replaced recently. It just screams "<font color="yellow">YELLOW!</font>"
one of the guys at work uses a custom file menu dialog that replaces the windows standard one. must be a plugin. seems to work fine in max and ps and offers more customizeability than the default thing.
Explicit is better than implicit. The more you code, the more you realize that programming languages that 'automatically do things' such as replace spaces with underscores, or are 'smart' in other ways, make your life hell.
Here's another topic in this same section, which recently received a bunch of replies and might help you: What is the conventional workflow for texturing rocks for an environment?
@SimonT It looks like yes, the new forum software parses the # symbol as a search hashtag, so it replaced your links. :( Also it looks like your signature links need to be updated. Sorry about this, just one of the kinks in the transition.
My guess is Verold had a hand in it since it replaces qremesher (which previously had a 'detect curves' button that always asked for the full version, which several people were confused about). I'm surprised and happy it works this well.
