The layer brush has a special feature that lets you use morph targets to limit how high it'll go when adding depth. Store a morph target for the plane before you start sculpting, then use the layer brush. You can make as many strokes as you want, and the maximum height is based on the Z intensity setting. -

You've a few options You could use crease in maya for the hard edges before bringing it in to zbrush, think you need to use zapplink for that. You could bevel the edges in maya and reproject to get a consistent mesh Store a morph target at level 0, smooth it a couple of times, drop back to level 0 and restore morph target. -

Try the insert edge loop tool with the equal distance option enabled. Then when you click closer to the target edge it'll follow that form, it's a feature I'd really like to see in Multi-Cut tool as well. Ya, I work in the book section of Target, and saw these when they came out, but I didn't want all of you to feel the pain I feel inside. <<<Emo. I actually burned down the Target upon seeing this atrocity, and didn't have web access in jail. I'm back now. Luckily I still have the job. -

If the vertex order is the same (meaning for example, that vertex # 2134 is in the same spot on both meshes), then you should be able to store a morph target or layer on one Tool and then import the second OBJ over top of it (not as a new subtool, but by using Tool: Import to update the existing model). If you use Morph Target and store MT, move your plane a distance equal to the desired thickness of your sword, then you can select Create Difference Mesh from the Morph Target subpalette.
