My vote goes for Keyboard Shortcut Override being turned on, its the devils button... It forces the shortcuts for sub menus to override the 3dsmax main shortcuts. So when you're working on vert mode in edit poly with KSO on, Ctrl-S will toggle soft select on and not save. It's a little button in the top menu that looks… -
