+1 for C4D, that and Sketchup are the main apps I use at work for archviz. I use Max for anything game related though, with a touch of Modo here and there. -

I doubt this is related to windows. Did you install the old nvidia dds plug-in for 3ds max ? Because it conflicts with the native 3dsmax dds support.
