Per is winsauce in his post, one last advice is go check other people online sketchbook at conceptart.org and check out how they improve and what are their strategies to do so. Good luck dude and do things the hard way like PER4096 said. There are no shortcuts really. -

A good improvement. Maybe the ear could be a little bit more red/saturated - it's thinner flesh and light passes through it, illuminating the blood inside and giving a more reddish tint, especially when lit from behind. You might also want more colour variation across the face - try making the chin area subtly more blue… -

if you do get a wacom, make sure to check this out: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=154862 it's a nifty little trick to edit the pressure sensativity so you dont have to jam the pen into the tablet to get full pressure. -
