Great update! That should produce a nice normal map. As for how many polygons your low polygon object should be? For that I would say 200-400 polies on the conservative side and 600-800 if you wanted to really round out the corners and the cylinders. Just my estimates though.

I export the lowpoly meshes from Maya 30 Tris to Zbrush then I use dynamesh on a level of 800, ( can go 1000, depending on how exact I want it). That will get a nice amount of denisty to the mesh but aswell enough to keep my original shape.
Ok, thanks for the infos. My mesh has so far about 80k polys and it will go to around 200k polys. And maybe i try to sell the end product in Turbosquid. A high poly mesh with a lot of floating geo overlapping each other wont be good for that.

Here goes full character prototype. Model done in Marvelous, ZBrush, 3dsMax. LOD0 - 62 838 tris Textures done in Substance Painter, for baking I used new tools in Marmoset Toolbag 3. Screenshots from UE4, Marmoset Toolbag 3 and ZBrush.
