Because they're a far better representation of actual values than srgb( ie 0.5 is actually 0.5) and you don't get crushing of values at either end of the spectrum
@spacefrog how's max 2015? vs 2016 and 2017? I'm hesitant to get a newer version than 2015 because there are always bugs but is there a difference in them that make the bugs worth it?

make sure you've set the modifier's luminance mid point to 0.5 ... if it's 0.0 then it will only push out, if it's 1.0 then it will only push in. 0.5 will use mid grey as mid height.

You should be able to take reflection vector, use transform vector and go from tangent to screen, then component mask of R,G then *0.5 and +0.5 then use that as your image's texture coordinates
