It shouldn't be too hard to get a new card. I'm running maya, max, mudbox, and zbrush perfectly fine on a Radeon 5770, which goes for between $120 and $140 now days. -

kurt_hectic, there are several things that may cause issues, but yes 16-bit normal map may help. I have a 4gb 760gtx that I used this last year for my uni assignments. The vram was a huge upgrade from my 1gb 6850 and I'm more then satisfied with the card so far.
