When you build lights in UDK you actually render lightmaps for static meshes in your lvl, so it's not only lightmass related.

(Resurecting old thread) I've noticed recently that the freeform and related graphite tools work much better in Orthographic views than Perspective.

Have you tried camera speed thing on top center panel of UDK? What u mentioned seems like a issue related to that.
