Started the challenge today. I am going for a more realistic version of the scene, rather than sticking with the Warcraft style. At this stage just modelling, not UV'd anything, so lots of errors with the lighting. I am making quite a few changes to things to make it sit into the style I want to go for. -

Sub-d isn't perfect and often creates unintuitive, messy results, (one of the reasons they aren't used in industrial design). For most people it is an iterative process of creating a shape, finding problem areas, fixing them then storing that new shape in your brain for later use, or as you put it "Trial and error". -

I merged the high level sub-tools, and when I try to Unwrap the high res merged mesh I get an error listed below: "Not enough memory to complete this unwrap. Split your model into different SubTools in order to reduce the poly count." So what do you think? -

I definitely have the latest version - the errors I was suffering was the moment I tried to select create clothing Maya would crash instantaneously and another person on my course suffered the exact same issue. I'm honestly not sure why it happened, but shifting the work to Max for simulation worked fine. -

Yeah that model's a mess. Some older models tend to import incorrectly too. I had an experience like that while trying to import Google warehouse models. Best of luck to you. I don't think STL Check can clean up a model like that. It just checks for mesh errors. -

When I toggle off "Use Precomputed Shadows" on an object I get an error when baking: Performance Warning Untitled_6 StaticMeshActor_3 Static Mesh component 'MyPackage.Plane' not lightmapped and not using a light environment - will be inefficient and have incorrect lighting! Set bUsePrecomputedShadows=True to use lightmaps… -
Re: Zbrush. Applying noise blows up my mesh and ruins it.
I usually try to keep the noise curve in the middle of the frame or on the upper side, that way the "blobby" effect gets reduced a lot. You can still use the same curve, but might increase strength to get same effects. You can then clean some errors on corners, etc. with Morph Targets :) -

That was actually pretty useful and good insight. Its encouraging to know that process of trial and error is fine and is used by someone as good as you are, I seem to always assume people that do awesome stuff just have these vivid images in their head and nail it first try. Very useful post. Thank you. -
