Hey do you know that in UDK you can open up the example maps and look at the polycount of the props yourself?

The right edge chamfer example can be accomplished with edge extrude w/ height set to 0, just throwing that out there.

Here's an example. The blend textures are loaded in the Landscape Tool, not the material. They are not stored as vertex color though, they are actual pixel data.

Most standalone uv tools does have special features to unfold tubes and belts. For example Headus Uvlayout or Rizom.

I found that in the example above with a simple sphere - I can freeze transform and the light will work wherever the sphere happens to be.
