If you rely on certain scripts or plugins it's also good to know that Python is not supported and some scripts or plugins might not work anymore. -

mudbox, mari and modo are also able to bake UDIMs.... and maya with some python help... -

Webfaction - as tech artist I like that they're Python developer friendly. Moved there from Dreamhost. It's a bit pricey but good service and features. -

Yeah why not :) I'd even consider Python. But learning a bit of MEL first is always good.
