@wirrexx - Thank you for the detailed feedback. I was going for the cinematic look and I liked it looking gross and uncomfortable - like nothing good is going to happen here in this hacker basement. But I guess I got carried away with the camera FX and so I have dialed it back. -
xoliul shader not working correctly
I have max 2012 and the xoliul shader 2 installed. I read the instructions and the trouble shooting. I have the .fx files in the correct folders. I have nitrous disabled. I installed the shader in max running as an administrator and I can load up the shader just fine... but when i load a map in the shader i get these error… -

like the look of his enviro! as far as im aware some effects don't work in tiledshot especially post effects so you'll have to settle for the standard screen shot command, go into your post fx settings and ramp up AA to give you better results. -

There's a long thread about it in the General Discussion. http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125122 The two big limitations are that you can't export hi-res models, and limited rendering and FX tools. Depending on your pipeline, that could be anywhere from not a problem at all to a total deal breaker. -

Yeah, right now the game industry is raking in more cash than the movie industry. The modellers and animators and other artists are actor, set designer, costume, special FX, and a host of other positions when compared to the Movies. So when are THEY gonna get the $20,000,000 deal for working on a game? -

right. also, do we really think blur or blizzard cinematic output is up to the standards of the big screen? i'd say their stuff definitely works for what they are doing but it seems still a far cry in visual quality, especially in terms of believable animation, from the big fx houses. -
Re: Normal-mapped alphas in max
have you tried the rtt .fx shader or any of Ben Cloward's normal map shaders? If not I recommend checking it out and seeing if you get the same problem (just a suggestion to narrow down the problem and see if it's consistent).
