I've done all routes. I went to school and got a BS in Comp Sci and BFA in Fine Art. Worked for a while then went back to one of the 'specialty schools' to get training in 3D. I second what most everyone has said on this thread. Just some more stuff.. Your characters need more detail and life to them. I see your robot character im my opinion as something you can do alot with. I would improve him with alot fo details in the normals and it would benefit greatly from a high poly and some AO etc...… -

I would definitely have modelled a highpoly mesh and baked that down to get a normal-map. For an asset as small and simple as this, for a current-gen console game, you'd be mad not to render down from highpoly. It just gives you a better end result. Yes, it will be a disadvantage if you want to go to a studio that does a lot of hand painted art and you don't do 2d art.
