Lack of practice is probably why you suck at uv's :P. I mean sure it's confusing (and boring) at first, but with the new tools available you have no more excuses. Just my 2 cents.
yes, i know someone who did something similar. Plus, you can always get a 3d program and Photoshop installed and practice when you have slack times (very likely).

This is pretty standard practice though, isn't it? You ship your title and then take all the testers off the pay roll until you need them again in a few months time for the next title.
I agree with albino goldfish, just practice at doing one body part and do it as many times until it looks the way you want. Well. i did a paintover, hope its helpful

diggin the outfit, not so much the boots... military clothing tends to be more practical/functional, I don't think platform boots would be very wise when you're running around the deck of a ship.
I made this to practice my tileable sculpting, going for a very stylized PBR approach, with texturing in Substance painter. Would love some feedback on it, I was thinking the stone might need a bit more colour variation but I'm not too sure. Cheers in advance!
