I'd rather say 'know what to expect and model accordingly'. For most subd meshes that's not really hard, there are just a few corner cases and by working with subd meshes often, you even learn to utilize triangles and pentagons to achieve what you aim for - because sometimes, you just need to shift the pole to a bit less… -

@Rocket Brian thanks for advice! I always use lots of anatomic references and trying to do my best. I found out that I have more problems with clothings (folds and stuff) then with anatomy. Sometimes I even want to switch to sculpt mode and use it to make things more smooth. But I dont want to do that. It's like cheating… -

Take a look at my example file. I rotated the model's pivot 22.5 degrees, so then I can use Parent transform space to move/rotate/scale at that angle. The workaround you mention is exactly what the Clone modifier does, except it's all in the modifier instead of having a bunch of instances in your scene. The only drawback… -

What's probably more important about the arcade thing is that you have a crapton of polygons in all the circular stuff, but the countertop/armrest thingy only has 7 sides which makes it look very lowpoly.
