Start with a Sphere or a Box that's been subdivided and go from there, just make sure you have enough supporting geometry to avoid pinching in the areas you plan to cut into.

You still have MAJOR pinching going on there, add a high spec material and you will see. You need to double the amount of sides your base cylinder has for that to work.
Hah, funny coincidence, I just started making it myself. Here's the wires for it, maybe it helps. Some parts are pinching a little bit, but it's a fairly small amount and it works for me.

you might want to try something like this: this will you give you (most likely) some pinching on that top edge, but depending on what it is that thing, perhaps you can get away with it.
Thanks a lot perna, that definitely smooths it out. The pole still leaves a bit of a pinch at the corner, causing a slight line where they meet that falls off gradually. I also tried using a pentagon like in some of blazier's examples, but they didn't smooth so well. I'm not sure if they're really good when wrapping around…

Here's a possible solution for the first pinching. It might not look like your reference here, but the geo is tweak-friendly if you want thinner or sharper shapes. Edit: It does require marginally moar geo.
