If you have a humanIK rig I think you get something similar to that. Most rigs in maya though I think are custom built and a UI if needed is created by the rigger or another member of the team.
You need to configure your rig and animation so it plays properly. With no joint system you will need to use the Legacy rig; under Animations be sure to set it to Loop so the turbine will continue to spin.
The extra bones don't stop the collapsing. They stop the twisting from being so severe and therefore reduce the collapsing. It's a well known rigging technique. Biped rigs come with these bones called "twist bones"

Did you check different rig types (generic or Humanoid)? If your animation not working properly in both rig type, bake your animation properly in you 3D program (3ds max)

your rig looks better than when i tried to rig my snake model. getting the shoulders right was a pain in the ass for the kind of movement i needed. good luck though!
