Too many steps imho. Faster: 1. Add an Unwrap modifier. 2. Edit mode 3. Polygon mode 4. Flatten mapping. -

Thanks for the breakdown on your work flow. Landscapes are a weak point of mine, so having a set of easy to follow steps like these are really emboldening.
