if you use 4 separate maps / UV layouts, you are much more restricted in the placement of the UV islands. imagine a very long thin UV island. you might not be able to fit it in a 1024 map but you would in a 2048. another aspect might is that you can use the space much better. you dont have to pay attention to the borders…
