The CNN article goes into a bit more detail. Basically, the cure requires the patient's immune system to be completely wiped out and replaced. Risky and expensive. -

The ID Selector filter has been discontinued a while ago, it is now replaced by the "Add color selection" item in the effect drop down menu. -

Pencilsword ran a strip on something similar to this. Replace money, with connections and you've got the analogy. Connections open doors, portfolio keeps them open.
