Anytime you make a new MIC you are creating a new Draw Call. So while the per pixel cost of multiplying AO on top of your mesh is negligible, you are creating some performance cost by having multiple materials. If these are huge meshes, like building size, and they only contain like 3-5 materials it probably won't be so… -

A recent game that I worked on and where i used ShoeBox every day was Lynx Lunar Racer. The game was build using Unity and NGUI as UI framework. Screens like that are typically handled via some render target, so yes, you would want each to fill their own 0-1 space. Fallout 4 is a good example, they have several stacked meshes IIRC: A static one on the bottom for when the display is off, one for the actual display, and a couple more on top flaring out for a glow… -
