You can do it in both ways..using the blend, layers or with the alternate smoothing method..though use very subtle smooth and do not rush it. And add some extra details after some smoothing is done. Hope that helps! -
Re: Generator mask problem
You can add additional paint layers on top of the generator. Same context menu but the option below "add generator". Also you can set the generator and the paint layers to different blending modes to get different effects. -

Nice explanation Mark!! Thats the issue with alphas. =\ It's either... A) DXT5 with Alpha Blend, looks great but is unlit (more expensive) B) DXT1 Opacity Mask, Hard edge can look shitty but can be lit and cast shadows -

Bringing this back from the dead again, I was looking for an online ref for skinning for someone (hard creases on the inside of joints, blending on the outside, self-intersection is fine etc.), but couldn't find any. This might be a decent place to discuss it? -

In another few years, Onlive will no longer exist. It tries to give the publishers everything they could dream of and bleeds the consumer while leaving their quality of service at the mercy of their internet connection. It's a hand job to the publishers and a dry anal hump to the consumer. -

with the company i'm with now all the artists do rough tests in engine while they work then pass to me for final assembly at which point i take care of all the apropriate naming conventions, shaders, animation, blends, ect... -

I think some of your colors are bleeding into the other parts. Try masking the high poly model with different, bright colors and then bake that down to a diffuse mask. This will help mask things out more accuratly then by doing it by hand. -
