I really dig the direction, but the sword does not right now look like a root is branching around it. The shape is a bit to unstructured and reads more like clay. -

Well, not sure if this is the right method but i just unparented the swingarm bone from the root, set its orients to 0, re-parented it back and all is well. -

To ask an obviously question... Are your hip/root curves exactly the same for the left and right steps? If not, that would explain the different results even if the feet are exactly same. -
