I think Sony borked the hardware, with multiple sku's. They should have just released the system with no hard drive at $499, and allowed you to upgrade. -

Does the front output jack work if you uninstall the Realtek driver and cold-boot the system? I would also check connections in the case. -

He used format, not format /q. A quick format will just wipe the file system and leave the data there, a full format zeros the entire drive. -
