This is a bad idea all around. Could you imagine the shitstorm if Microsoft choose Communistcast and Sony chooses, say AT&T, for their preferred internet provider? its a handy tool if you have lots of overlaying UV islands and want to be able to choose them seperately. Like if i have a single object mapped to many UV sheets, then i can just have each sheet on its own level in the W coordinate and be able to choose them easily. I think the problem is that you're converting your poly mesh to a true subdivision surface rather than smoothed polygons. What you need to do instead is select your model and choose mesh>smooth[options]. Make sure division levels is set to 2, and apply it. That'll give you the same result as smooth preview.
